Air Cleaner / Intake Hose Removal (Diesel)

Which procedure applies to you

The manual splits this by engine, not just by year — petrol non-MPI, petrol MPI, and diesel each get a different step list with different part counts. This guide is the diesel procedure specifically (the 4D56), which is notably shorter than either petrol version — no air flow sensor, no secondary air hose, no hot air control valve to deal with.

Removal steps

Factory service manual (PWWE8608), page 15-10.

1. Remove the air intake hose.
2. Remove air duct C.
3. Remove air duct B.
4. Remove air duct A.
5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
6. Remove the dust pan assembly.
7. Remove the wing bolt.
8. Remove the air cleaner element.

Reverse the steps to reinstall — there are no special service points or torque callouts for this procedure, it’s a straightforward reversal.

• Check the air cleaner body, cover, and packing for deformation, corrosion, or damage.
• Check the air ducts for damage or splits — this is where a perished 30-year-old hose usually gives itself away.
• Check the air cleaner element for clogging, contamination, or damage. If it’s only lightly clogged, blowing dust out from the inside of the element (not the outside) is enough — no need to replace it.
